Half Moon Wildlife Management Area (WMA) in Sumter County will celebrate the opening of the area’s new hiking, biking and riding trails on March 19.

Bring your bike, your horse or your hiking boots and take to the trails, or take the hayride or van tour to see and learn about the area. Hayrides and van tours will alternate throughout the event from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

For early risers, a wildlife biologist from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission will lead a birding tour beginning at 7:30 a.m. Call 850-570-5950 to reserve a spot.

Half Moon WMA is located at 8864 C.R. 247, Lake Panasoffkee, just off SR 44 between Wildwood and Inverness.

From Inverness at the intersection of U.S. 41 and SR 44, travel east on SR 44 about 8.5 miles, look for the Half Moon WMA approach sign, turn left on CR 247, and follow to the end of the road.

From the Wildwood exit 329 on I-75, go about 7.5 miles west on SR 44, look for the Half Moon WMA approach sign and turn right (north) on CR 247.
